Who we are
New City Church is a church that focuses on environmental justice. While we are based in Minneapolis, our digital community joins us from all over the country and the world.
In 2022, New City launched a second “branch” in Northeast Minneapolis. Check out Northeast UMC to learn more!
New City got its name from Revelation 21, which describes a heaven where God lives in a “new city” where all tribes are welcomed in, where there is no more violence, and where the whole earth is renewed. Our community reflects this vision, as we have members with all kinds of racial/ethnic identities, socioeconomic statuses, gender and sexual identities, intellectual and physical abilities, immigration statuses, and religious beliefs.
what we believe
We affirm that Black Lives matter, we celebrate LGBTQ+ people, and we certainly invite the doubts/questions of people who do not identify as Christian. Additionally, we work to end the shroud of shame surrounding sexual violence and intentionally try, in every level of our work, to create a culture of consent.
what we do
Our mission is to create inspired and skilled communities that join God in transforming the world. We believe that through inward transformation (through things like worship, prayer, and spiritual practices) we can create outward transformation (like justice for people and the planet).
We gather regularly on Sundays and throughout the week in intentional communities as we work toward this mission.
In everything we do, we continually commit to centering marginalized voices. This means creating a space for people who do not get a chance to be heard in broader society. We are committed to centering the lives and experiences of Black, indigenous, and people of color. We are committed to centering the lives and experiences of queer people, particularly trans and nonbinary people. We are committed to centering the earth.
“Centering marginalized voices,” however, does not mean that people with privileged identities can’t attend or participate. It means that we are mindful of who gets to start, stop, and steer our conversations and life together.
Our 2024 Spiritual Growth Areas
At the end of 2023, we participated in a community listening project and survey to hear where our community felt God was calling them to grow. Together, we identified four internal and four external practices we want to focus on in 2024. We will weave these goals into each of our sermon series and groups!
